About

Established in 1934, Port Adelaide District Hockey Club (PADHC) is a grass roots hockey club based in Ethelton, South Australia. PADHC prides itself on a club culture that values family, inclusiveness, unity and loyalty.

We have our own pitch and clubrooms, located at John Hart Reserve on the corner of Swan Terrace and Hart Street, Ethelton. Our pitch, upgraded in 2012, is an FIH Category 1 pitch and is earmarked for upgrade in late 2025.

PADHC is proud to offer modern and recently refurbished facilities, including being one of the only metropolitan SA hockey clubs to offer ample undercover seating for spectators!

Our clubrooms underwent extensive renovations in 2024, resulting in an almost completely new facility. The brand new kitchen, bar and dining areas provide a modern and functional space for our growing club. Our change room building, known as the Dennis Meredith Pavilion (named after PADHC player and past president Dennis Meredith), was completed in 2021 and includes four home and away changerooms as well as official/umpire facilities and an accessible toilet. The changeroom upgrade brought our facility in-line with current day benchmarks for accessible and equitable sporting facilities.

PADHC participates in the Hockey SA Metropolitan Competition in Juniors, Seniors and Masters. We offer membership for players, officials and spectators of all ages and abilities. We have an immense history of success at the highest level with over 20 Premier League flags since 2000⁣.

The Rich Legacy of the Port Adelaide District Hockey Club (PADHC)

The Port Adelaide District Hockey Club (PADHC) has a storied past that stretches back to 1934. From humble beginnings as the Magpies Hockey Club, to becoming one of the most successful hockey clubs in South Australia, its history is marked by dedication, teamwork, and community spirit. Let’s take a journey through some of the most pivotal moments in the club’s illustrious history.

The Early Years (1934-1949)

PADHC’s origins date back to March 1934, when a group of hockey enthusiasts formed the Magpies Hockey Club. The club’s first uniform consisted of white shirts, black shorts, and black-and-white socks, a tradition that would later influence its official colors. In its debut season, the club played three matches against the Grange Hockey Club, securing two victories and a draw. By 1935, the club expanded to two teams and won its first premiership in the C Grade.

A defining moment came in 1937 when the club changed its name to the Largs Bay Hockey Club, reflecting its growing presence in the region. By 1949, an amalgamation with the Motors Ltd Hockey Club led to the birth of the Port Adelaide District Hockey Club, securing the black-and-white colors and a strong foundation for future success.

Growth and Consolidation (1950-1969)

The 1950s and 60s saw the club solidify its presence in the South Australian hockey scene. With the acquisition of the John Hart Reserve as its home ground in 1952, PADHC established a permanent base for training and matches. During this period, the club also saw significant investment in infrastructure, including the construction of clubrooms in 1956, largely funded and built by dedicated members.

On the field, the club achieved significant milestones, including its first A1 Grade Premiership in 1967. Additionally, the club’s influence extended beyond playing, with members contributing to state and national hockey as players, coaches, and administrators.

The Golden Era (1970-1979)

The 1970s marked a golden period for PADHC. The club became the dominant force in South Australian hockey, winning six consecutive A1 premierships from 1973 to 1978. With new clubrooms opening in 1972, PADHC became the envy of other clubs, offering top-tier facilities for players and supporters alike.

This decade also saw individual brilliance, with several club members representing Australia in international tournaments. Notably, Dennis Meredith became an internationally recognized umpire, and Trevor Cibich won multiple Best & Fairest awards, cementing his legacy in South Australian hockey.

Building for the Future (1980-1999)

As the club entered the 1980s and 90s, it continued to evolve, adapting to changes in the sport while maintaining its strong competitive edge. Investments in coaching, junior development, and community engagement ensured that PADHC remained at the forefront of hockey in South Australia.

The Port Adelaide District Hockey Club’s history is one of perseverance, achievement, and community spirit. From its modest beginnings in 1934 to becoming a powerhouse in South Australian hockey, PADHC’s journey is a testament to the passion and dedication of its members. As the club moves forward into the future, it carries with it a legacy built over decades of excellence on and off the field.

Preserving Our Legacy: The History 2034 Project

As the year 2000 approached, we compiled a history book to document our journey. However, with numerous successes and shifting priorities over the years, our history now needs an update.

In 2025, alongside our updated website, we are embarking on the History 2034 Project.

This significant initiative will focus on collecting historical records leading up to our 100th anniversary in 2034, preserving our legacy for future generations. More details will be shared as the project progresses.
